ADE Launches Nighttime Culture Index to Track Global Nightlife Health

The organizers of Amsterdam Dance Event have partnered with research consultancy VibeLab to launch the Nighttime Culture Index, a platform designed to measure the cultural value of nightlife economies. The initiative will debut in October during the 30th anniversary edition of ADE.

Six Dimensions of Civic Health

The project focuses on six distinct dimensions: diversity, creative ecology, space and infrastructure, community belonging, policy health, and environmental sustainability. The initial rollout covers six cities across six continents: Amsterdam, Lagos, New York, São Paulo, Seoul, and Sydney.

According to VibeLab co-founder Mirik Milan, Amsterdam's former Night Mayor, the index aims to turn local nighttime scenes into a connected, global advocacy network. Amsterdam serves as a model for institutional night governance while New York illustrates the tension between venue preservation and aggressive commercial real estate development.

Regional Nightlife Ecosystems

In São Paulo, local electronic music movements continue to connect Brazil's underground scenes to international festival circuits as artists like Alok and Vintage Culture rise to superstardom. Seoul navigates the balance between underground creative communities and rigid regulatory oversight while Lagos showcases a rapidly expanding African electronic music hub. Afro-house accounted for 70% of house music's total growth in 2025, according to the Sounds of 2026 report from Splice and MIDiA Research.

Sydney works to rebuild its live performance ecosystem following years of restrictive municipal policies. One festival organizer said in the summer of 2024 after canceling due to a staggering 529% cost increase that in New South Wales, electronic music is unfairly targeted, warning that only beige government-run events and commercial mega-corp festivals would survive while smaller diverse and boutique events die out.

Ongoing Annual Expansion

ADE and VibeLab intend for the index to serve as an ongoing annual fixture, maintaining the initial six cities while expanding the roster by adding at least two new municipalities per year in 2027 and 2028. The project relies on city coordinators embedded within each scene to ensure local accuracy, including urban planners, club operators, and music journalists.

The primary product will be an interactive public dashboard accompanied by an annual analytical report. The full findings and live dashboard will be released at the ADE Pro conference, which returns October 21-25, 2026.
