TL;DR

Amsterdam Dance Event has launched "30 YEARS ADE: Iconic Venues," a new editorial series examining the spaces that built Amsterdam's electronic music scene. The first installment focuses on Gashouder, the legendary circular venue that is reopening this year after two years of renovations including acoustic upgrades and a new underground level.

A Series Built Around Spaces, Not Lineups

Amsterdam Dance Event is marking its 30th anniversary with a new editorial series that shifts the spotlight from artists to architecture. 30 YEARS ADE: Iconic Venues explores the physical spaces that have anchored Amsterdam's nightlife and electronic music culture for decades, treating them not as event backdrops but as places where communities and musical movements have evolved alongside the city.

According to ADE, the goal is to examine venues as sites of collective memory where generations of clubbers have built emotional connections over time. Rather than focusing on lineups and performances, the series looks at the foundations of the scene itself.

Gashouder Prepares to Reopen After Major Renovation

The first installment centers on Gashouder, the iconic circular structure originally built in 1902 as part of Amsterdam's Westergasfabriek industrial complex. The venue has hosted landmark club nights and some of ADE's most memorable events over the years, with its longstanding relationship with Awakenings helping establish it as one of the most recognizable spaces in global techno culture.

After approximately two years of structural renovations, Gashouder is preparing to reopen with a pre-opening season beginning this month before officially reopening in November. The renovation includes major acoustic improvements, an entirely new underground level housing artist facilities, lockers, and visitor amenities, plus updates designed to create new staging possibilities while preserving the venue's historic industrial character.

ADE 2026 Events Already Confirmed

The timing aligns with Gashouder's planned role during ADE 2026. Several events have already been announced for the venue, including performances from Armin van Buuren, Job Jobse, Josh Baker, Sammy Virji, Franky Rizardo, Mochakk, and a collaborative event curated by I Hate Models and Nico Moreno.

The venue is positioning itself as a multidisciplinary space for live music, art, and performance beyond its electronic music roots. The series will continue to profile other venues that helped define both Amsterdam nightlife and global dance music culture.
