Code discovered in the latest beta version of Apple Music for Android points to a significant shift in the platform's subscription model. Strings referencing "Can't skip any more tracks" and "Premium access required" suggest Apple may be testing lower-cost or free tiers with usage restrictions.
A Departure from Universal Access
Apple Music currently offers the same feature set across all paid subscription plans, including its 30-day free trial. The service has no existing Premium category or tiered benefit structure. If these changes move forward, Apple Music would be adopting a model closer to Spotify, which offers ad-supported free tiers and multiple paid options with varying levels of access.
Unlikely to Go Fully Free
The company has consistently opposed ad-supported free streaming, arguing that it harms artists and devalues music. Apple has never introduced a permanent free plan outside of limited promotional periods. Any move toward a free subscription model would represent a reversal of a position the company has defended for years.
The beta code was spotted by developer Aaron on May 30, 2026. No official announcement or timeline for rollout has been provided by Apple.
