A Statement Through Sound Design
Barely Alive have made their position clear with 100% NO AI, a seven-track EP released today via their own Killed It! Recs imprint. The project rejects AI-generated music while showcasing the duo's signature dubstep sound across a range of collaborations. Every element of the EP, from artwork to vocals and production, was developed by humans.
The opener "OVERDRIVE" is a solo production that moves from angelic vocals into aggressive dubstep drops, featuring squealing synths and bass growls. "POINT BLANK," featuring Edison Cole and Dani King, delivers melodic dubstep with vocal-driven hooks, while "WE SET IT" pairs Ragga Twins with heavier bass.
Collaborations Across the Tracklist
"LAY ME DOWN" uses Luci's vocals to build tension before erupting into chest-rattling sound design. Casey Cook and LOST FRIEND appear on "LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND," where airy lyricism meets a dance-leaning bassline that mutates into full brostep impact.
The closing track "NO BAD PARTS" brings in TYNAN and Madyx for a heavy-hitting finale, with punk-adjacent vocals stretching into a dramatic buildup before the drop lands with both Barely Alive's bite and TYNAN's sonic fingerprints.
Industry Context
The EP arrives as AI-generated music becomes a pressing concern for the industry. Deezer reported earlier this year that its platform receives nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks per day, amounting to roughly 44% of daily uploads. A recent study conducted by CISAC and PMP Strategy estimates that $4.6 billion in annual artist revenue could be lost to AI-generated music by 2028.
