Calvin Harris Becomes First DJ to Headline Rock in Rio's Main Stage

A Quarter-Century in the Making

Rock in Rio introduced a dedicated electronic music tent in 2001, carving out space for DJs and electronic artists within Cidade do Rock while the festival expanded beyond its rock roots. Electronic music returned in subsequent editions, eventually evolving into New Dance Order, the festival's dedicated electronic stage.

The 2026 stage measured 56.5 metres wide and 22.5 metres high, featuring more than 500 square metres of LED panels. Electronic artists appeared throughout the lineup, with Alok also performing on Palco Mundo. In previous years, David Guetta, Alok, and Marshmello had played the main stage, but another artist still closed the night. On September 6, 2026, Calvin Harris became the first DJ to hold that final headline position.

The Set and the Lineup

Calvin Harris brought a catalogue spanning electronic music and global pop, drawing from collaborations with Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Ellie Goulding, and The Weeknd. His Palco Mundo set included "One Kiss," "This Is What You Came For," and "How Deep Is Your Love," tracks that have remained fixtures in both club and festival environments.

The 2026 edition of Rock in Rio ran seven days and featured rock, pop, hip-hop, K-pop, and electronic music. Headliners included Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Elton John, Maroon 5, Stray Kids, and Twenty One Pilots.

The booking marked Calvin Harris's first appearance at Rock in Rio, arriving exactly 25 years after electronic music was first given a dedicated area at the festival. The milestone connected that early 2001 chapter with the scale electronic music now holds within the event.
