Ready for the Weekend Delivered Three UK Top 20 Singles
Two years after I Created Disco introduced Calvin Harris as both producer and vocalist, his second album Ready for the Weekend reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart in August 2009. I'm Not Alone had given him his first solo UK No. 1 single earlier that year, and the title track followed at No. 3. Flashback became the album's third single in November.
Flashback reached No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart and spent nine weeks in the Top 100. On the UK Dance Singles Chart it climbed to No. 3 and logged 19 weeks inside the Top 40, extending the momentum of an album cycle that had already delivered a No. 1 album and a chart-topping single.
Harris Handled Production and Vocals, with Ayah Marar on Additional Vocals
Much of Harris' early catalog featured his own voice alongside the songwriting and production he handled himself. On Flashback, Ayah Marar contributed additional vocals while Harris wrote and produced the track. The single also received remixes from David Guetta, Eric Prydz, and Goldie, bringing three established electronic music artists into the release and offering different interpretations of the original.
The Shift Toward Featured Vocalists Began Shortly After
Over the following years, featured vocalists became increasingly common across Harris' releases. You Used to Hold Me followed in 2010, before Bounce with Kelis and Feel So Close arrived in 2011. His third album 18 Months expanded that approach further with Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding, Ne-Yo, Example, and several other artists.
Seventeen years after its release, Flashback remains closely associated with Ready for the Weekend and Harris' breakout year in 2009. The track sits within a period that captures Harris before collaborations became the dominant mode of his career.
