Four defendants face 35 charges
Businessman Katiso "KT" Molefe and three co-accused appeared Monday in Johannesburg's High Court, where the trial was scheduled to begin. Proceedings were postponed due to scheduling conflicts involving a separate criminal case, according to Mail & Guardian.
The case centers on the 2022 murder of DJ Sumbody, an influential musician and entrepreneur who was shot and killed alongside two bodyguards in Woodmead. The defendants face 35 charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Allegations tie case to other high-profile killings
Prosecutors allege that Molefe orchestrated the artist's death with assistance from his co-accused. The case also involves allegations linking the defendants to high-profile murders, including those of fellow DJ Hector "DJ Vintos" Buthelezi, businessman Don Tindleni and engineer Armand Swart. According to South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority, forensic evidence allegedly connects high-caliber rifles used in DJ Sumbody's murder to other fatal shootings.
Scheduling conflicts delay proceedings
The postponement stems from Mabusela and Kekana's involvement in another criminal trial involving businessman Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Molefe's defense attorney is also involved in that proceeding, preventing the two trials from running simultaneously.
Molefe remains free on bail of 400,000 South African rand, while his three co-accused remain in custody. The trial is now scheduled to begin in July 2027.
