France Debuts Classic Anthem in Opening Match
New tournament rules allow competing nations to select their own anthem for goals and other pivotal match moments, and France chose Daft Punk's turn-of-the-century classic. The country's World Cup opener gave fans three chances to hear the robots' generational dance track and sing along live. 'One More Time' rang out across New Jersey's MetLife Stadium in France's win over Senegal on June 16th, including twice after goals by superstar striker Kylian Mbappé.
Bangalter's Busy Month
More than two decades after its release, the track remains one of the world's most universally recognized anthems. The selection arrives amid a busy stretch for Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter, who released his new solo album Mirage earlier this month before a surprise pop-up performance in Brooklyn, marking his first U.S. DJ set in 17 years.
Other Nations Go Nostalgic
Other nations have made their own nostalgic selections this tournament. England chose Planet Funk's 'Chase the Sun' for their goal song while Germany opted for Peter Schilling's 1980 synth-pop staple 'Major Tom.' FIFA also announced and released its own official tournament anthem, 'DNA,' a star-studded collaboration between David Guetta, Megan Thee Stallion, EJAE and Andrea Bocelli.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
