Fred again.. has become the latest high-profile artist to push back on generative AI, posting notes written nearly a year ago in which he admits to worrying about how the technology could disrupt the world while insisting it will never take away the joy of making music.

The British electronic music superstar shared a series of Instagram Stories on September 25. The experience of building something from nothing is where the value lives, he wrote, adding that anyone fortunate enough to create music or any other kind of art has sensed this "magic" throughout history.

Fred also said he has never been tempted to experiment with AI-powered music software. Handing that stage of creation over to a machine would clash with what he loves about music, he explained.

The Messy, Determined Effort of Creation

Fred closed his notes by celebrating the messy, determined effort of chasing an idea. He described the years of trial and error spent trying to bring to life a piece of music that only exists in your head as one of the great privileges of the job.

While he admitted to worrying about several ways AI could disrupt the world, he said the loss of that experience would not be among them.

A Growing Pushback Among Producers

Fred's comments arrive as more electronic music producers have publicly pushed back on generative AI in recent months, questioning what the controversial technology means for creativity and ownership. His take focuses more on the humanity behind the craft rather than the legal or economic concerns that govern it, offering a view from someone who sees the creation of music as a practice worth protecting for its own sake.

Skrillex recently echoed that sentiment with his own comments lamenting the scourge of AI. During his first formal interview in more than 10 years, the dubstep icon pointed to his experience returning to records by Justice, Daft Punk and Metallica, saying the music still lands because it carries with it the sense that the artist is speaking directly to the listener.

In other Fred news, the chart-topping artist produced music for the long-awaited GTA 6 game, releasing a track called "Sexy Magic" alongside CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, PinkPantheress and Etienne de Crécy. He's also reportedly in talks to headline the 2027 Coachella festival along with Tame Impala and Dua Lipa.
