Fusion Festival Resumes After Nearby Fires Force Evacuation

Emergency Response and Safe Return

Organizers at Fusion Festival suspended the event shortly before 7 p.m. local time Thursday while emergency crews responded to two separate fires outside the festival site in Lärz, Germany. Guests calmly made their way to the former airfield's runway as smoke became visible nearby.

Firefighters quickly brought the situation under control. Around two hours later, organizers confirmed the festival had safely resumed. Despite dramatic scenes of smoke and emergency vehicles crossing the site, organizers stressed that the fires never reached the festival itself. No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed there was never any danger of the flames spreading onto the festival grounds. The cause of the fires remains under investigation.

Heat Warnings Preceded the Incident

Earlier this week, Fusion had already warned attendees about extreme heat and dry conditions. Organizers encouraged festival-goers to stay hydrated, avoid open flames, and dispose of cigarettes responsibly because of the elevated fire risk.

Underground Culture on a Former Military Base

Since launching in 1997, Fusion has become one of Europe's most celebrated countercultural gatherings. Held on a former Soviet military airfield in northeastern Germany, the event attracts around 65,000 people every summer, though the focus extends well beyond music.

Instead of headline acts and corporate sponsors, Fusion embraces underground culture. The lineup remains secret until attendees arrive, while more than 40 stages host everything from techno and psytrance to live bands, theatre, art, comedy, art installations, and circus performances. Photography is also discouraged across much of the festival, creating an atmosphere where creativity and self-expression take priority over social media.

One of Fusion's most distinctive traditions is its daily quiet hour. Music stops across the entire site from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., giving everyone a chance to rest before another full day and night of dancing. The festival operates without major commercial branding, serves only vegetarian and vegan food, and encourages visitors to look after one another. That sense of community was evident during Thursday's evacuation, as attendees remained calm and followed instructions while emergency services worked nearby.

Festival operations have now returned to normal, with more than 3,300 artists scheduled to perform before the event concludes on Sunday. With Fusion set to take a planned break in 2027 before returning in 2028, organizers and fans will be hoping the remainder of this year's edition continues without further interruption.
