A cross-generational rework project
Galantis has released The Devil's Tax Return: Volume 1, a six-track EP that reworks songs spanning multiple generations and genres. Out now via Counter Records, the project finds the Miike Snow member and co-writer of Britney Spears' 'Toxic' turning his production lens toward songs that first captured his imagination as a listener.
Among the reimagined tracks is The Killers' 2006 alt-rock anthem 'When You Were Young.' According to a press release shared with EDM.com, Galantis was drawn to the song's arena-sized melody and wanted to loop his favorite passages while introducing a "garage-born bass and beat."
A last-minute breakthrough at 133 BPM
The Killers rework nearly didn't make the EP. Galantis told MusicRadar that he had repeatedly abandoned the track and initially submitted the project without it. During Easter weekend, he requested another 48 hours, sped the track up to 133 BPM, and found the garage direction was what finally made it click.
The EP also includes reworks of Feist's '1234,' Frankie Valli's 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' and José González's 'Stay Alive' from the 2013 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller. On the Valli rework, Galantis preserves the chord progression through vocoders and soaks the familiar hook in reverb.
Context and creative continuity
While Galantis' 2024 album Rx explored neurodivergence and music's therapeutic role, The Devil's Tax Return: Volume 1 offers another personal lens on his creative approach—finding new possibilities inside songs that have stuck with him long after the initial connection took hold.
The Devil's Tax Return: Volume 1 is available now on streaming platforms.
