GRiZ Returns With 'Future Funk Volume 1'

GRiZ has released Future Funk Volume 1, his first full-length album since returning from hiatus. Out today, the project leans into heavier bass design than his early material while staying rooted in the funky, brass-driven principles that have long defined his sound. Saxophone, hip-hop vocal energy, and wonky bass collide across a record that feels bright, weird, and unmistakably GRiZ.

Evolved Sound, Familiar Chemistry

Outlaw opens the album with a deep, undulating bassline beneath horns and swaggering lyricism, immediately suggesting an evolved version of GRiZ who has found new range between jam-influenced funk and bass music. That energy carries into Rump Shaker, a reunion with Big Gigantic, with whom GRiZ released the fan-favorite Good Times Roll a decade ago. Smooth saxophone patterns glide over a fluid beat while bass growls give it enough bite to detonate in a festival set without requiring added live-edit theatrics.

Rainbow Machine featuring ProbCause is colorful and bass-forward with a feel-good pulse. BBFL, which arrived as a single in April, continues in that lane with hip-hop vocal fuel, while Funk You Up! keeps the album locked into the sweet spot where groove and low-end pressure riff playfully off each other.

Heavier Terrain, Signature Personality

In the album's middle stretch, Found Your Love opens with a soulful vocal intro before settling into a sunnier, Chasing The Golden Hour-adjacent groove, favoring warmth over peak-time chaos. Then When I'm Hot comes in with force. Featuring Effin and ProbCause, it delivers some of the album's heaviest dubstep and sound design while still folding in sax and keyboard riffs, showing GRiZ's ability to explore heavier terrain without sanding away the personality that makes his music instantly identifiable.

iLLest In The Game, another ProbCause collaboration, starts with measured pacing before landing with heavier force in its second drop. 555 pulls back into a more relaxed, high-vibrational pocket, full of wubs that feel exploratory rather than explosive. Closing track Back to Me turns the funk levels up again, ending the album with a fitting sense of release.
