The Extended Look Effect
When Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026, Elderbrook and Bob Moses' "Inner Light" accompanied the closing sequence. In the days that followed, global Spotify streams for the track increased 1,070%. Playlist additions also rose 4,155%, bringing the 2021 collaboration another large wave of listeners five years after release.
Numbers Behind the Surge
In the four days immediately after the presentation, "Inner Light" recorded around 694,000 official on-demand U.S. streams—a 462% increase compared with the equivalent four-day period one week earlier. The track also reached No. 1 on Shazam's U.S. Top 200, showing that people were actively searching for the song after hearing it.
With no new version or rerelease attached to the moment, the increase came directly from the track's use in GTA VI. Rockstar Games paired an existing electronic release with new footage from one of the year's most closely followed games, and listeners returned to the original track in large numbers.
Part of a Pattern
Music has played an important role in GTA VI's trailers. Trailer 1 used Tom Petty's 1989 track "Love Is a Long Road," whose Spotify streams later increased by roughly 37,000% compared with the previous week. Trailer 2 followed with The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together," which also saw a major increase after appearing with new footage.
The latest extended look brought similar attention to songs from several decades and genres. Chimbala and Omega's "Se Me Nota (Agárrame)" reached around 464,000 U.S. on-demand streams after a 3,047% increase. Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman" climbed 386% to around 321,000 streams. Depeche Mode's "People Are People" also recorded an 89% increase during the same comparison period.
Electronic releases were part of that listening increase too, including Aluna and Jayda G's "Mine O' Mine." The track recorded a large rise in global Spotify streams after appearing in the presentation.
"Inner Light" was originally released through Parlophone Records in 2021 and had already established its own audience. With Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19, 2026, its music is already reaching new listeners months before launch.
