James Hype has built his reputation on technical four-deck mixing, layering vocals, loops and tracks in real time. Now he's scaling that approach to a challenge he describes as potentially impossible: mixing 1,000 tracks in two hours using 16 CDJs and four mixers. Project 1000 will take place in December 2026 with support from Red Bull, though venue and broadcast details have not been announced.
From Four Decks to 16 Players
Hype revealed the 16-CDJ setup in September, a square booth divided into four groups of players connected to four separate mixers. The expanded rig is not designed to run all 16 tracks simultaneously. Instead, it gives him immediate access to a wider pool of vocals, loops, samples and full tracks, allowing him to prepare multiple ideas without constantly reloading the same decks.
The technical challenge extends beyond hardware. PRO DJ LINK typically connects groups of four players, so the 16-deck configuration required dividing the setup across four mixers and building a workflow that keeps the entire booth synchronized. Hype has had to retrain his muscle memory for reaching tracks and managing transitions across the expanded layout.
Testing the Limits of Multi-Deck Mixing
Hype spent October rehearsing with eight decks as a halfway point. After one practice session, he admitted there was "a long way to go," making it clear that doubling his usual setup would not come easily. His typical two-hour sets contain around 50 to 60 tracks. Project 1000 asks him to fit more than 16 times that amount into the same window, averaging roughly 7.2 seconds per track.
Despite the speed, Hype insists the project is more than a numbers test. He calls it a "love letter to all the dance music tracks that I've loved through history," using the format to pull from different eras while applying his fast-paced multi-deck technique on a concentrated scale.
Project 1000 takes place in December 2026. Red Bull is involved following previous collaborations with Hype earlier this year. Further details on venue, audience and streaming will be announced closer to the event.
