The Heart Behind 'Stay Still a Little While'
EDMTunes: Congratulations on all your amazing releases! One that truly resonates and sits close to our hearts is 'Stay Still a Little While' with Lane 8. It’s such a beautiful and emotive track. What does this song mean to you personally?
Jyll: Thank you so much – that truly means a lot to me! 'Stay Still a Little While' is an incredibly personal song. I wrote it during a period when I felt quite lost within my own mind. I wasn't where I wanted to be, and everything felt confusing and slightly out of place – like I was moving too fast, but at the same time, not moving at all. It was this strange, potent mix of numbness and quiet optimism, reflecting the contrasts of life we all face every single day.
I truly believe that when you own your own darkness, you own your happiness too. I’ve become pretty good at concealing how I truly feel, so most people don’t often notice what’s happening inside. And sometimes, there’s even a sense of shame that comes with those feelings – like life is such an incredible gift, so why do I still feel so lost, drained, or sad at times? (Quite regularly, if I'm honest!)
I think something I deeply struggle with is the feeling of being a burden. Even though, deep down, what I really crave is for someone to just see me – to notice that I’m not okay, without trying to fix me. Because that inner work, that journey of healing and discovery, is something you absolutely have to do yourself. But having someone there, just holding space, makes an immense difference. It’s a powerful reminder that you’re not alone in it.
This song is genuinely about allowing yourself to pause. To stay still for a moment. To bravely face the darker parts of yourself, to do that essential shadow work, instead of constantly running from them. Because I firmly believe that only through that courageous confrontation can you regain clarity, rebuild your vision, and profoundly reconnect with yourself.
The Genesis of a Masterpiece: 'Stay Still a Little While'
EDMTunes: How did 'Stay Still a Little While' first come together? Can you walk us through the creative process between you and Daniel? How did the song evolve from its initial idea to the final, breathtaking version?
Jyll: I absolutely adore how this song came to life! I vividly remember Daniel sending me this little piano snippet – it wasn’t even in time, you could hear background noise from his home, his kids playing… it was a bit messy, raw, and wonderfully authentic. But what truly leaped out of that one-minute memo was the sheer emotion. It was all there, palpable and powerful!
I recorded my first version almost in one take, very intuitively. And I think a significant part of that original take actually made it into the final version – the one you all know and love now. I do remember being really nervous sending it back to him after 'I Will Leave A Light On' had been such a massive success. But it felt right, it felt honest, and that's what truly matters.
