Kavinsky, the French producer behind the synthwave staple "Nightcall," has died at his home in Paris. According to the Paris prosecutor's office, emergency responders who arrived at the scene late Tuesday found nothing suspicious, though an official cause of death has not been released. The musician, born Vincent Belorgey, would have turned 51 this Friday.

For a certain generation of dance music fans, Kavinsky's death hits differently than most producer news. He wasn't a festival mainstay or a Beatport chart regular in recent years—his catalog was thin, his live shows rare. But "Nightcall" did something few dance tracks manage: it escaped the genre entirely and became shorthand for an entire aesthetic. The pulsing arpeggios, the vocoded vocals, the neon-noir mood—it's the track that arguably did more to popularize synthwave as a mainstream-adjacent sound than anything else released in the 2010s.

From Drive to London Grammar

The record's crossover moment came in 2011, when director Nicolas Winding Refn placed "Nightcall" over the opening credits of Drive, the Ryan Gosling thriller that became a cult favorite largely on the strength of its soundtrack. The song later got a stripped-down cover from UK indie pop group London Grammar, introducing it to yet another audience that had never heard of Kavinsky or his 2013 album OutRun, itself named after the retro-futurist genre he helped define.

Paris Roots and the French Touch Legacy

Kavinsky's connection to Paris runs deep in ways that matter to dance music history. He came up in the early 2000s alongside the city's electronic scene, at one point opening for Daft Punk—a pairing that makes sense given how both acts leaned into car culture, driving imagery, and vocoder-heavy production as signature elements of the French touch and its offshoots.

The clearest sign of "Nightcall's" staying power came just last year, when Kavinsky performed it during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The moment reportedly triggered a spike in Shazam searches for the track, making it the most-Shazamed song in a single day in the app's history—a strange but fitting data point for a producer who spent most of his career outside the spotlight.

French Culture Minister Catherine Pegard said the country had lost one of its most singular voices, adding that "Nightcall" remains danceable and nostalgic in equal measure, and that its reach will keep crossing generations and borders.
