Built in the Off-Season
Melon Bomb didn't arrive on Ibiza via corporate boardroom. The collective—Paul Reynolds, Scott Gray, Corbi, and Ben Santiago—launched their first event at Pikes in February 2015, relying entirely on local islanders. That modest gathering for friends has since grown into a global fixture of funk, disco, and soulful house, but the foundation remains rooted in the off-season community.
"The off-season fan base is massively important to us and has played an essential part in our success," the collective says. "The first event we ever did was at Pikes in February 2015 and relied solely on our fellow islanders. Fortunately, Pikes encouraged us to continue a monthly party that went right through the year. As the season progressed, the islanders brought their off-island friends along and helped us build a strong fan base outside of Ibiza."
That local support created a ripple effect. When tourists arrived for the summer, they stepped into an established, authentic scene where residents acted as advocates. The result was trust—an asset Melon Bomb identifies as central to their longevity.
"Trust is one of the most important foundations because audiences and artists need to believe in what a brand stands for beyond any single event or lineup," they explain. "With Melon Bomb, that trust means people know they can expect a certain level of quality, authenticity and community, even when the music, venue or artists evolve. Over time that trust gives us permission to take risks without losing our identity."
Ibiza Is in Their DNA
While Melon Bomb now tours internationally, the brand remains inseparable from the White Isle. The collective credits a combination of place, timing, and people for their success—variables that couldn't be replicated in London or Manchester.
"It would have been possible [to start elsewhere], but not in the same way. A huge part of our success was a combination of place, timing and people—we all met in Ibiza at the right moment, Pikes gave us a unique environment to build something organically and we had a strong community around us who believed in what we were doing, and that helped the brand grow through word of mouth," they say. "Places like London or Manchester would have offered a much bigger market, but also more competition. The culture, community and energy that has made it what it is was very much born in Ibiza… Ibiza is in our DNA."
The island's demographic—spanning teenagers to pensioners—also shapes the Melon Bomb experience. "The scene in Ibiza is known for its wonderful blend of an international crowd and a unique demographic that spans from the teenagers to pensioners," the collective notes. "The crowds have an incredible appreciation and knowledge of good music and are always ready to give their all on the dancefloor. This is something we've always understood and have strived to deliver every time we play."
No Viral Moment, Just Steady Growth
There was no overnight breakthrough. Instead, Melon Bomb's trajectory has been built on incremental decisions and consistent growth. "What's got us to where we are now is really the accumulation of lots of small decisions combined with constant and steady growth," they share. "There aren't any standout moments that spring to mind as game changers, but I do think timing has a lot to do with many things that become successful. The timing of us coming together to form Melon Bomb was perfect and we've grown together as friends and as a unit."
The collective maintains the same ethos that brought them together in February 2015, evolving alongside the island while refusing to lose their identity in the process.
