TL;DR

Michael Gray's "The Weekend" celebrates 22 years since its release on November 1, 2004. The track reached No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and spent three weeks at No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart, bringing the established house producer to a mainstream audience after years of work with Full Intention.

Michael Gray built his reputation in house music through years of work with Full Intention alongside Jon Pearn, but it was "The Weekend" that brought his solo production to mainstream listeners. Released on November 1, 2004, the track combined disco sampling with house production and became his most recognizable solo record.

From White Label to Commercial Release

The track grew from an idea inspired by Oliver Cheatham's 1983 disco record "Get Down Saturday Night." Gray later explained that the project had been sitting on his hard drive before he returned to it and developed an early white-label version. DJs began supporting that version in Ibiza during the summer of 2003, more than a year before the commercial release.

As the record developed further, Shèna became its lead vocalist, with Xavier Barnett and Sally Still also contributing vocals. The finished version kept its connection to "Get Down Saturday Night," with Cheatham included among the songwriters.

Chart Performance and International Reach

The early support in Ibiza gave "The Weekend" an audience before its commercial release, but the finished version took the track much further. It peaked at No. 7 in the UK and remained in the Top 100 for 19 weeks. It also spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Official Dance Singles Chart, while an earlier version titled simply "Weekend" had already entered the dance chart in August 2004.

Its success continued outside the UK, with chart positions across markets including Australia, the Netherlands, and Italy. The track also reached Billboard's dance radio rankings in the United States.

Continuing the Momentum

"Borderline" featuring Shelly Poole followed in 2006, reaching No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the Official Dance Singles Chart. Gray continued releasing music under his own name and with Full Intention, while disco and house remained important parts of his work in the years that followed.

Twenty-two years on from its release, "The Weekend" remains the song most closely connected to Gray's solo breakthrough, representing the moment when his established house production career reached a wider mainstream audience.
