Serotonin Circuit Identified in Mouse Study

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and China's Anhui University have identified a specific brain circuit involving serotonin that affects tinnitus perception. The team conducted experiments using mice and confirmed that serotonin increased the perception of the condition, which causes ringing or buzzing in the ears without an external source.

"We've suspected that serotonin was involved in tinnitus, but we didn't really understand how," said co-senior author Zheng-Quan Tang. "Now, using mice, we've found a specific brain circuit involving serotonin that goes straight to the auditory system, and found that it can induce tinnitus-like effects. When we turned that circuit off, we were able to ameliorate the tinnitus significantly."

Implications for Dance Music Community

Tinnitus is widespread in the electronic music community, where shows and festivals can expose audiences to dangerous noise levels. Loud noise exposure is the predominant cause of the condition, though it can also result from high blood pressure, TMJ disorders, earwax buildup, or medication side effects. Many forms of tinnitus have no cure, depending on the underlying condition, though treatments exist to manage symptoms.

Toward Region-Specific Treatments

Co-senior author Laurence Trussell said the research could lead to targeted treatments that balance serotonin's benefits and risks. "Our study suggests a delicate balance," Trussell said. "It may be possible to develop cell- or brain region-specific drugs that steer the elevation of serotonin in some brain regions but not others. In that way, it may be possible to separate the beneficial and important effects of the antidepressant from the potentially harmful effects on hearing."

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, mirror reports from patients who say serotonin-elevating drugs like SSRIs worsen their tinnitus. Tang noted the research provides "a much clearer picture of what's going on in the brain, and points toward new possibilities for treatment."
