SoundCloud has acquired Nina Protocol, the blockchain-based music marketplace that shut down operations on July 15, 2026. The deal was announced Wednesday, July 22, just over a week after Nina went dark. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Migration Path for Nina Artists
Under the new agreement, artists who previously used Nina will be able to migrate their music to SoundCloud and opt into its creator ecosystem. The acquisition also folds in Nina's editorial archive and its genre map feature, a tool the platform used to visualize connections between scenes and sounds.
Nina Protocol built its reputation as a decentralized marketplace for artists, releases, and independent editorial content, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional streaming platforms by putting ownership and distribution directly in the hands of musicians using blockchain infrastructure. The platform announced its closure back in May, leaving questions about what would happen to the catalog and editorial work built up during its run.
Archive Preservation Still Uncertain
SoundCloud has not yet detailed how it plans to handle the archive long-term, and the company says it's still working out how Nina's editorial content and third-party contributions will be preserved or republished going forward. For artists who built a following on Nina, that uncertainty is likely the bigger story than the acquisition itself — the platform's genre map and editorial voice were part of what set it apart from typical marketplace tools.
The move continues a pattern of larger platforms absorbing niche, artist-focused services rather than competing with them outright. SoundCloud, which has spent the past several years rebuilding its own creator monetization tools, gains a ready-made archive and a segment of artists already comfortable with independent distribution models.
