Global Underground has brought back its nubreed series after a lengthy hiatus, tapping San Francisco's Spencer Brown to helm the thirteenth edition. The compilation arrives October 16, landing squarely in the middle of the label's 30th anniversary year.
Two-disc format spans three decades
The mix is structured as two distinct discs—one lighter, one darker—pulling together tracks that span three decades of dance music history alongside Brown's own productions. The nubreed series has historically served as a platform for rising talent, and Brown's selection continues that tradition.
A departure from solo albums
Brown isn't new to the album format. All three of his LPs to date—Illusion of Perfection, Stream of Consciousness, and Equanimity—have consisted entirely of his own original productions, making this mix project something of a departure. It's a chance to place his music in conversation with the records that inspired him.
In a previous interview, Brown described his approach to album construction: "I just realize that track A and track B and track F and track G, for instance, they all have something similar, or that B sounds really good with G, and F sounds really good with H, and I'm like 'Okay, well actually this one sounds amazing before those four tracks' and then it starts to piece together naturally, rather than forcing things together."
World tour to follow
A nubreed world tour tied to the release is planned for late 2026 into early 2027, with dates and cities still to be confirmed. nubreed 13 is available for pre-order now ahead of its October 16 release.
