SRI Builds Jersey Club Track Around Single Vocal Expression

Brooklyn-based producer and DJ SRI releases 'hmph' on July 31, a 150 BPM Jersey club track that centers on a single vocal expression. The track builds around one repeated "hmph," chopped and manipulated until it functions as both rhythm and texture. Desi and femme vocal fragments are processed heavily throughout, with some pieces serving more as sonic texture than language.

Vocal fragments replace traditional hooks

Rather than a lyrical hook, SRI uses a brief vocal reaction as the track's foundation. The repeated "hmph" is cut and layered across the production until it becomes part of the percussion itself. Surrounding Desi vocal textures receive similar treatment, chopped until tone and rhythm take priority over meaning. The approach keeps the Desi influence present while giving vocals a physical role in the production.

The production cites SOPHIE as an influence, audible in the synthetic processing and hyperpop touches. A ballroom section appears in the second half, shifting the rhythmic feel before returning to the central vocal idea. The 150 BPM pace maintains the Jersey club foundation while pulling from multiple club traditions.

Tamil and Desi elements remain central to SRI's work

The release follows 'STOP&STARE', which also combined Jersey club with Desi melodic and rhythmic ideas. SRI's earlier track 'THIMIRU' took a Tamil word used to criticize women for audacity and reframed it around confidence. Her Goddess Complex project incorporated Carnatic vocals alongside hip hop and hyperpop influences.

SRI's DJ sets move through Jersey club, house, hip hop, baile funk and South Asian club music. In 2026, she appeared at multiple SXSW showcases, including the South Asian House SOUNDVILLA event, and has played The Lot Radio and support slots for artists including Raja Kumari.
