Stage Failure Forces Mid-Show Relocation

The Chainsmokers were rushed off stage Friday night at Vanderbilt University's 'Lights on the Lawn' concert after the platform began to buckle during their first song. Rather than cancel, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart moved their equipment to the venue's front-of-house area at the opposite end of the lawn and completed the set.

The annual student-run event raises money for the Mary Parrish Center, a nonprofit serving survivors of domestic violence. This year's crowd was estimated at 7,000 students.

Crowd Left Scrambling After Equipment Move

The improvised relocation created confusion among attendees. Fans who had waited near the barricade at the original stage suddenly found themselves at the back of the crowd, while those near the front-of-house setup gained an unexpected close view.

"Glad they were able to improvise but disappointing for those of us who waited it out getting crushed at the original stage barricade just to all of a sudden be in the very back," one attendee wrote online afterward.

Second Incident This Week on Campus Tour

The stage failure marks the second infrastructure issue to disrupt The Chainsmokers' 2026 college campus tour this week. A performance at the University of Tennessee on Thursday night was canceled after a crowd surge caused barriers to collapse and sparked a stampede, according to local CBS affiliate WVLT News.

Vanderbilt has not released details on what caused the structural failure. No injuries have been reported at the time of writing.
