Tomorrowland's Mainstage Evolution Traced From 2005 to 2026

From Truss and Screens to Immersive Worlds

The first edition of Tomorrowland took place at De Schorre in Boom, Belgium on August 14, 2005, as a one-day festival with around 9,000 attendees. There was no official annual theme yet, and the Mainstage was much closer to a conventional festival setup, with visible truss, lighting, screens, and a central performance area surrounded by relatively simple decoration. The large story-based scenic structures that later became closely associated with Tomorrowland had not been introduced yet.

The second edition in 2006 returned to De Schorre, still taking place across a single day and without an official annual theme. The Mainstage became more decorative than the year before, with larger scenic elements surrounding the central DJ area while much of the truss, lighting and technical structure remained visible. In 2007, Tomorrowland expanded from a one-day festival to two days for the first time, while the Mainstage continued developing beyond the simpler setups of its first two editions. Larger video screens and more substantial decoration became part of the design, though the stage still retained the visible truss and technical structure of a traditional festival setup.

The Introduction of Themed Storytelling

By 2008, Tomorrowland had grown to around 50,000 attendees, and the Mainstage was becoming much more ambitious in scale and decoration compared with the festival's first three editions. The façade was broader, the scenic elements were more developed, and the stage was beginning to look less like a standard festival setup with decoration added around it. Tomorrowland still had not introduced an official annual Mainstage theme, but that would change the following year.

In 2009, Tomorrowland introduced its first official annual theme, Masker, marking a major change in how the Mainstage was designed. A huge face dominated the structure, with the mask integrated into the stage architecture so the Mainstage itself became part of the theme instead of simply serving as a backdrop for the DJs. That approach would continue to develop in later years through giant books, trees, kingdoms, creatures, and complete fictional worlds.

Expanding Scale and Recurring Narratives

In 2010, Tomorrowland returned with Zon, centered around a giant sun that became the main visual focus of the stage. The design also used rainbows, oversized plants, lily-pad-like structures, and other fantasy elements, giving the Mainstage a much more complete visual identity than the year before. In 2011, Tomorrowland introduced The Tree of Life, with the Mainstage designed around a large fantasy tree surrounded by oversized vegetation, sculpted faces, mushrooms, and other natural forms.

In 2012, Tomorrowland introduced The Book of Wisdom, transforming the Mainstage into a giant fantasy library measuring around 130 metres wide and 28 metres high. Oversized books filled the structure, while the enormous central book could physically open to reveal integrated LED screens, combining scenery, movement, and video in one design. Major elements were fabricated off-site before being transported to De Schorre.

Some Mainstages introduced entirely new worlds, while others returned to earlier ideas, including The Book of Wisdom in 2019 and LIFE in 2024, which expanded the story first introduced through The Elixir of Life in 2016. The 2026 edition will feature the Consciencia Mainstage, continuing more than two decades of visual identity, technical scale, and long-running storytelling.
