Two Separate Incidents Within 48 Hours

The first death occurred on September 3, when a man in his mid-50s suffered a medical emergency at the festival. Organizers said lifesaving treatment began immediately before he was transported to the onsite emergency care center, where efforts continued before he was pronounced dead.

Two days later, another participant was found dead at the event. Sixty-year-old Craigh Mann was discovered by campmates at his camp at around 3pm on September 5. The two incidents occurred separately in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, with no public indication at this stage that they were connected.

The causes of both deaths have not been disclosed, leaving several details surrounding each case still unknown. Authorities reported no apparent signs of external foul play in the first death, while no cause has yet been announced in Mann's case.

Context of Previous Fatalities

Fatalities have occurred at Burning Man in previous years. In 2023, 32-year-old Leon Reece was found unresponsive on the playa, with drug intoxication suspected. A year later, 39-year-old Kendra Frazer was found unresponsive on the opening day of the 2024 event, prompting an investigation by authorities.

The festival faced a homicide investigation in 2025 when 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov was found dead on August 30. The Pershing County Sheriff's Office investigated his death as a homicide, and that investigation remains open. Authorities confirmed ahead of Burning Man 2026 that potential suspect DNA profiles had been identified through a crime lab report received in May, though no suspect has yet been publicly identified.

Other Incidents at This Year's Event

Beyond the two deaths, this year's Burning Man has been disrupted by severe weather, dozens of arrests linked to alleged drug sales and trafficking, and a serious injury involving a participant who fell from a 55-foot structure.

As Burning Man 2026 reaches its final day on September 7, thousands of participants will begin leaving Black Rock City. Further details are expected as authorities continue their investigations into the two deaths.
