TL;DR

A 29-year-old man has died after being struck by a pickup truck in a parking lot near VELD Music Festival at Toronto's Downsview Park on Saturday night. The collision occurred as thousands of attendees were leaving the festival grounds following the final day of the weekend event. Toronto Police are investigating and have not announced charges; the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Victim Struck as Thousands Exited Festival Grounds

Toronto Police responded shortly before midnight on Saturday after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck and pinned beneath a pickup truck in a parking lot near the festival grounds. Fire crews freed the victim before paramedics transported him to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police later confirmed he had died from those injuries.

The collision occurred as large crowds exited Downsview Park following the final performances of the weekend. Like many major music festivals, VELD experiences a significant surge in both pedestrian and vehicle traffic immediately after the event ends as attendees make their way to parking lots, public transit, rideshare pick-up areas, and nearby roadways.

Driver Cooperating with Ongoing Investigation

According to police, the victim was in the parking area when a pickup truck struck him. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police have not announced any charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.

While the collision occurred near the festival grounds, police have not indicated that any event operations contributed to the incident. Investigators have also not released information regarding speed, impairment, road conditions, or any other factors that may have played a role.

Weekend Featured Major Electronic Acts

VELD remains one of Canada's largest electronic music festivals, attracting tens of thousands of fans each summer. This year's edition featured performances from Martin Garrix, Alesso, ILLENIUM, Dom Dolla, John Summit, Mau P, Sara Landry, and dozens of other artists across three days at Downsview Park.

Toronto Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash camera footage from the area to contact Traffic Services at 416-808-1900 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers. Police have not released the victim's identity.
