Shambhala returns to British Columbia's Salmo River Ranch from July 24–27 with Seven Lions, Crankdat, Excision, and a lineup spread across seven stages. For first-timers, the festival's reputation precedes it: the Salmo River cutting through the grounds, sunrise sets at Pagoda, and a community culture built over two decades. Here's what to expect.
Camping Opens Days Before Music Starts
The festival officially runs Friday through Sunday, but three of the seven stages open Thursday. This year's early programming includes SkiiTour's kickoff tradition, Vancouver rapper SonReal, and a bonus Crankdat set ahead of his Sunday slot.
Camping opens Tuesday with reduced pricing that takes effect at 8 a.m. each day. Unlike festivals with assigned plots, Shambhala lets attendees claim their own space. Staff won't guide you to a marked campsite—you find your spot and set up. The unwritten rule: arrive with your group and stake your perimeter immediately. Reserving territory without setting up draws complaints from staff and neighbors alike.
The Salmo River Is Part of the Experience
The Salmo River runs through the festival grounds and offers relief from southeastern British Columbia's summer heat. Throughout the day, attendees float downstream on inflatable tubes or cool off between sets. From certain points along the water, you can hear and see the Living Room stage as DJs play afternoon sets.
Pace Yourself and Explore Off-Schedule
Music runs from noon until 6 a.m. most days. Veterans recommend breaks, hydration, and food over marathon attempts to catch every set. The festival offers morning yoga and wellness sessions Thursday through Sunday for those looking to reset.
Beyond the stages, Shambhala's grounds include a wedding chapel, a Wishing Tree where attendees hang handwritten notes, and art installations tucked between trails. The festival encourages wandering without a fixed itinerary.
Shambhala takes place July 24–27 at Salmo River Ranch in British Columbia. Camping opens July 22 with early-bird pricing.
