A Sampling-Driven Prequel to Last Year's LP
Zeds Dead have released a surprise album, framing the collection as a prequel to last year's sophomore LP, Return to the Spectrum of Intergalactic Happiness. The 14-track offering extends the sampling-driven, spatiotemporal concept of its predecessor by drawing on sources that include vintage hypnosis tapes, documentary audio and Romantic Era pianist Frédéric Chopin, according to a press release.
Titled Return to the Return (of the Spectrum of Intergalactic Happiness), the album is also inspired by NASA's Voyager mission, imagining music as both something received from the past and transmitted into the future. Producing breakbeats, drum & bass and UK garage, Zeds Dead cited as influences DJ Shadow, RJD2, Peanut Butter Wolf and Madlib.
Creative Freedom Over Commercial Expectations
The duo said the album is untethered by any expectation of what a Zeds Dead record should be. In a statement, they explained the approach: "The initial Return to the Spectrum felt like the birth of a new era for us. We hadn't written a proper full-length project in almost ten years and a lot had happened in that time – ups and downs, soul searching, creative experiments, COVID. We knew we wanted to throw ourselves fully into another project, but the timing had to reveal itself. When it did, it felt right. With this album, we're continuing on the same path we started then. Returning to it, if you will."
They continued: "The most important thing for us was how we approached making this record. It wasn't about what might work best at a show or what the single was. It was 100% about letting inspiration take us wherever it wanted to go. We followed ideas because they excited us, not because they fit into any expectation of what a Zeds Dead record should be."
Deadbeats Turns 10, Tour Launches at Red Rocks
The release lands during a milestone stretch for the pioneering dubstep duo, whose record label, Deadbeats, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Zeds Dead are preparing their Journey of a Lifetime tour, a 15-date North American headlining run they have called the largest of their career. The tour opens with two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in July and precedes a planned hiatus in 2027.
Return to the Return (of the Spectrum of Intergalactic Happiness) is out now via Deadbeats on streaming platforms.
